Dermaplaning Skincare Hack

Dermaplaning is getting to be a very popular skincare service and can leave your skin looking flawless. If you don’t know what dermaplaning is, it is a facial service where an aesthetician will give you a deep clean, dry very well, and then take a scalpel to take off dead skin and surface hair. They do this carefully by pulling the skin taught and taking the scalpel (sharp blade) at a 45 degree angle and gently scrape away dead cells and vellus hair from the surface of your skin. Unlike shaving, the scalpel goes the slightest bit deeper to be able to take off the dead skin cells rather than a razor just shaving the top hairs. I love this because it is a gentle form of exfoliation unlike the physical scrubs and it leaves your skin feeling incredible and so smooth. This makes it really great to be able to apply skincare and most of all, create a great base for putting on makeup.

Here's the catch, Dermaplaning facials are usually a little over $100.  Yes, when you get it done, you get to lay down and they will do all the cleaning, scarping and they put the proper skincare after the dermaplaning, but why pay all that money for this type of facial if you can easily do it at home. Here is how you can do dermaplaning in your own home.

  1. Cleanse: Make sure you are thoroughly cleansing. When getting a facial, they typically will double cleanse and maybe even triple cleanse with an oil cleanser if you have a lot of makeup on. Make sure your skin is completely dry afterwards. I use the Cloud Cleanser to gently remove all the grime from the day and keep my face soft and replenished.

  2. Dermaplaning: You can get your own scalpels off of amazon for a pack of them for around $10. Once you have your scalpel, start gently scraping from the outside in. You have to be extremely careful that you are working the blade at the 45 degree angle so that you don’t cut yourself. (Amazon link)

  3. Tone: After you finish the dermaplaning over the entire face, I prefer to spray with an alcohol-free toner or just water to make sure that you have a fresh face. The Dew You Mist is an especially great toner replacement to prepare your face for the rest of your routine.

  4. Serum and Moisturizer: Simply choose your favorite serum and moisturizer and you just gave yourself a $150 or so facial! (*When choosing your serum, try to stay away from an acids or irritating that could cause for your skin to break out or turn red. Your skin is very sensitive after taking off all of the dead skin cells on that top layer so be sure to be careful and protect your skin)

*If you’re feeling fancy, add a steaming step after you tone the face to help hydrate and replenish your skin.
