Balancing the skin microbiome to achieve your best skin is just now becoming a larger conversation in the beauty and personal care industry (we’re finally starting to use science for better skin). And it truly is something consumers should understand because having a healthy skin microbiome

So what is your skin microbiome?

The word sounds very sciency but we are really talking about a bunch of bacteria and other very small micro-organisms in the layers of our skin. These microbiome organisms are extremely diverse but they control how our skin may react, whether it helps it maintain smooth, glowing, and healthier looking skin, or it can cause breakouts and other dramatic issues with the skin (pigmentation issues, rash, etc). To make sure we are keeping our skin healthy and flawless, we need to understand how to keep our skin microbiome happy!

What changes our skin microbiome?

Many recent studies have been finding the food/drink you put into your body heavily influences our skin microbiome which is why we need to understand what our body needs from our nutrition. But some other things can influence the skin microbiome like the temperature, moisture, pH (acidity), sebum content, and UV rays.

How do we keep our skin microbiome healthy?

Like I’ve already talked about, your diet and nutrition will create a significant impact on your skin microbiome as our gut and skin microbiome are very closely related. So next time you see a breakout coming on, make sure you get rid of all the junk food in your diet.

Change your skincare/makeup products. Some of the cheaper cleansers or makeup may not have the best formulations and can change the pH of your skin, how much moisture is on your skin. ESSNTLS products are specifically formulated with at least 25% Rosewater which is great to help balance out the good bacteria on the skin to help repair and defend your skin from any harmful microorganisms. This is why our Dew You Mist is such a great product to keep around everywhere you go to refresh your skin and make sure you’re keeping healthy moisture, pH and skin microbiome levels.

Maintaining a skincare routine will also help with keeping a good balance with the skin microbiome. This will help control your moisture, pH, and overall skin health. Also, don’t forget your SPF! The SPF will help protect you from the UV rays that are killing off the good micro-organisms keeping your skin healthy.
